Vasireddy Seeta Devi (b.1932) is a progressive writer with a strong sense of social responsibility. Starting life in a village where girls were not allowed to cross the street to go to schools, she retired as the director of Jawahar Bal Bhavan. Seeta Devi is a novelist of stature who has raised a storm in political circles, and her writing reflects the political economy of daily life with admirable clarity. Her magnum opus, Matti Manishi, portrays the emotional conflict between ossified feudal values and the alienation of capitalist culture with stark realism, rarely surpassed. Her other novel, Marichika, was banned, and Seeta Devi accused of having connections with and glorifying the Naxalite movement; the ban was later struck down by the High Court.
Seeta Devi’s awards and honours are numerous. She has received the Best Writer Award from the Andhra Pradesh Sahitya Akademi five times and Doctor of Letters from two universities. She is a member of the Regional Censor Board, regional advisor to the Central Sahitya Akademi, president of the Tripuraneni Ramaswamy Trust and member, Doordarshan Advisory Board. Seeta Devi was also on the General Body of the Andhra Pradesh Sahitya Akademi for five years; on the Sahitya Akademi Women Writers’ Advisory Board as member for twenty years and its secretary for five years.
